Processing visualization software

Two weekends ago I went to a city in the beach, to visit a friend, and she asked me if I was interested in participate in a workshop about art, technology and the earth. I always liked being around artist so I went. There a couple of artist I met introduced me to the works of John Maeda, and his disciples at the aesthetics and computational group at the MIT. They created Processing. This software is an open source programming language that was created by Ben Fry and Casey Reas. It was built for the electronic arts and visual design communities.

The following are some images that actually are being filled with lines and color as time pases, but I could not capture that effect in this blog, so I decided to show the stills. This forms are bases mainly in two simple numerical series: Fibonacci and Factorial.

Hope at list this encourages people to experiment with art and technology, considering that I did never perform any kind of plastic artwork before.

If I had any artistic talent at all I'd be working with fractals. just amazing stuff.

Does Mother Nature just expose eternal mathematical priciples? If so, man can just replicate nature. I find it tricky to define 'art', but I think it corresponds 'manmade', that is: 'technology'. And mathematics is about knowing whether two enteties are equal.

Charles Gramlich;
Hello, nice to see you, Actually i was drawing fractals at 16, I remember having to understand a little imaginary numbers to understand the famoous fractal called mandelbrot that uses an algorithm that processes those kind of numbers in order to select what color to choose for a pixel or if to leave it empty.
you could download many easy to use free software that helps you design and draw your own fractals

I would love to do that. My problem is that I do not program, is it hard to learn to do it? what is the best way to start?

I found very interesting what you said. excellent.

I think that mother nature trowed to the universe some patterns that are kind of universal. It is hot exactly the same as mathematical principles.
I do not think man can replicate many interesting aspects and parts of nature, but it did learn to imitate others.
I have the intuition that art is also nature made, but I can not justify it.

Well it is about knowing equalties but we has to recognize that it also is about making planes and cars, creating the electric light, and enabling the existence of the internet, and other things that did change society completely. (anyway let me tell you that what I explained about tech and math left me pretty puzzled)

it makes me really happy that you found this post interesting and enriching specially because you do not dedicate to visual arts but you have a great variety of interest and knowledge. And you have criteria to distinguish what in my world are considered things with potential to be good
Take care

abonymus1: I loved your poem about patterns witch is the area I am paying more attention to with this software. your comment remained me of it,

Why did you choose this software and what others did you tried?

Because I myself are in love with blender.

Guillermo:
Well I a do not know how hard or easy it is, I think it depends on many factors such your innate abilities, the particular language, and your material to learn.

I believe that you show try it at least for a couple of days a short time, installing it is very easy and there are great tutorials you can follow step by step in order to learn deeply the concepts. I would download various teaching books and would select the one I like the most. There are also online tutorials that can be good.
Best Regards

Gabriela;
I chooses it for a couple of reasons like that the language is python which is my Favorite- Because a couple of friends that I made while living on the states that where graphic designers loved it and did very nice things using it, Other reason that is kind of arbitrarily is because my c arrear role model since I was 18 used it to do his programs.

That looks very interesting, Mariana. I may well try it.

Strongly recommend you to try it, do it like a game, have fun. In an upper comment I give advice to someone about how to start, you may as well read it.

Hey Mariana,
I've been by here a few times and have looked at your content here. I find it very interesting and once I've finished up all end of school year stuff I do want to go and experiment with it. I also find it interesting because my son is studying multimedia (I think his uni is changing the name of this program though). He just came back home for the summer and I want to show this to him too.

mariana,

these are lovely(!)

what maeda and team are doing with the 'processing' project to gain insights, and for teaching, is very exciting

and as your illustrations here demonstrate, there certainly is an aesthetic potential to these explorations

good stuff, mariana -- much fun

I am glad you liked it, actually I find is fantastic this people's proposal, it is a great way to
learn and explore, it has great tutorials and manuals and also it is based on a really easy to learn
language which is python. Please feel completelly free to send me an email if you get stuck with something
or if you have an idea about something to do and you want some guidance about how to do it.
By the way if you like design check john maeda work, he is great.

/t: I agree maeda and company are incredible, from this 2 guys that programmed processing till jonathan harris work
that did implement processing to do incredible websites such as I feel fine.
Thanks a lot for encouraging me with me with my artistic skills, I really apreciate it.
Take care my friend.

Yourwelcome, So you use photoshop, good to know maybe I should give it a try one of this days, I have tried
doing some graphs with it but not much more. I might dig into it deeper.

Take care and thanks a lot for the encouragment.

what about that Mariana for maths

Unknown said...

I agree. There are patterns in the world, that we find beautiful. It is finding a coresponendence netween the outer world an ourselves. The object does not have to be manmade to be considered to be beautyful. Take a bird singing as an example! However, it's song is not "music". Could patterns based on mathematical series be beautiful? Yes you see them in nature. Shells, for example, are related to fibonacci series, which Dürer showed.

And math itself - at least the logic of computers - is about investigating relations between enteties. "Is A equal to B?" This is formalism. There seem to exist other disciplines that denies parts of classical logics. They calculate very well but come to other conclusions. Wish I could illustrate this. (The Mandelbrot set is not even 'mathematics' as I understand it).

where are you? write at least one line so that i can understand you are well.

Shubhajit: Thanks a lot for your concern. Actually I am really good, I would like to tell you more about what I am doing soon, I will try to send you an email so I let you know, and you how are you¿ tell me a little about your life whenever you have time.
Take care.
